Yabbying

Yabbying is great fun. Yabbies are fresh water crayfish. They can be eaten and taste a little like prawns. Yabbying is usually only sucessful in a month that contains an "R". The other months are usually too cold and the yabbies bury into the mud for the winter.

Many people catch them in a trap, but we do it the fun way!!!!

We gather up some sticks. We take a piece of cotton and tie one the end to a stick and a small piece of meat on the other end of the cotton. We poke the stick into the mud on the side of the tank and throw the meat into the water.

After a little while the yabbies will find the meat and try to take it away. We see the cotton tugging and we pull in the cotton and scoop them out using a special "bat" that Ian has made. Sometimes we don't eat them, and let them go back into the dam.

Everybody just loves it. It is so exciting when a yabbie (and maybe two) land up on the bank of the tank.

You've got to come out to "Meadow View" and try it.
